What “general labour” actually covers
It’s the broadest category and it’s the most common kind of casual hire in South Africa. Common needs:
- Moving and lifting — household moves, office moves, removals.
- Clear-outs — garage, garden, full-house clean-outs.
- Loading and unloading — deliveries, building materials, furniture.
- Casual on-site help — for construction, landscaping, events.
- Stacking, packing, sorting — for stock takes, warehouse work, market setup.
- Demolition help — knocking out a wall, removing old fittings.
The defining feature: physical work that doesn’t require a specific qualification, but does require reliability and effort.
Agreeing the rate
VukaWork is a marketplace — workers set their own rates and you can accept, negotiate, or pick a different team. Factors that fairly affect the rate:
- The physical demands. Loading concrete bags or demolition fairly costs more than light moving work.
- The area. Cape Town and Johannesburg sit at the upper end; smaller towns at the lower.
- Whether the worker brings their own transport (a bakkie or van).
- Team size and how the price gets split.
Get the team right
For physical work, the team matters as much as the price:
- Right size for the job. Two people in 6 hours often costs less than one in 12 — and finishes when you wanted it to.
- Specify lifting capability if it matters. “Two strong workers” is better than “two workers” if you’re loading a truck.
- Provide water and a lunch break. Standard practice, helps everyone do better work.
Agree the scope upfront
The biggest issue with casual labour isn’t price — it’s scope creep. Halfway through the day someone notices “while you’re here, can you also…” Be clear:
- What’s the actual job?
- What’s the agreed end time?
- Is anything explicitly NOT included?
- What happens if it takes longer than expected?
A clear agreement = no awkward conversations at the end.
