What kind of gardener do you need

The word “gardener” covers a wide range. Match the worker to the job:

  • Casual gardener — lawn cutting, weeding, hedge trimming, leaf clearing, general tidy-up. The most common arrangement.
  • Regular gardener — same as above but a fixed day every week or fortnight. The garden stays consistently tidy with no surprises.
  • Skilled gardener / landscape worker — design changes, planting new beds, irrigation, paving, retaining walls. Higher rates, more experience.
  • Tree work / pruning — for big trees, specifically. Often a separate contractor with rope/ladder skills.

For most homes, a casual or regular gardener handles 90% of the work.

Agreeing the rate

VukaWork is a marketplace — gardeners set their own rates and you can accept, negotiate, or move to another worker. What matters more than the headline number is what’s included in the agreement.

Factors that fairly affect the rate:

  • Whose tools. A gardener who brings their own lawnmower, shears and rake fairly charges more than one who uses yours.
  • The area. Cape Town and the leafier parts of Johannesburg sit at the higher end; smaller towns at the lower.
  • Experience and skill. General tidying is different from landscape work, irrigation or hedge sculpting.
  • Distance and travel. If they’re coming from far, expect a travel contribution.
  • Once-off vs regular. A regular weekly slot can fairly come in at a slightly better rate than a once-off visit.

Be specific about the scope

The biggest source of disagreements: what’s included. Decide upfront:

  • What’s the actual work? Lawn, edges, weeding, hedge, leaves, paths?
  • Whose tools? If you provide them, less for the gardener; if they bring theirs, more.
  • How long? Full day, half day, hourly?
  • Garden refuse? Who bags or removes it?
  • Lunch? Common to offer; agree what’s included.

Write the agreement in a short message — it sounds formal but it stops 90% of “that’s not what we agreed” moments.

The seasonal pattern

Gardens are seasonal. Common patterns South African homeowners use:

  • Summer (Oct-Mar): weekly or every-2-weeks visit. Lawn growth is fast.
  • Autumn: extra leaf-clearing weeks.
  • Winter (Apr-Aug): fortnightly or monthly. Slower growth.
  • Spring: big clean-up + planting + irrigation check.

Build your hiring rhythm around this and you’ll pay less while keeping the garden looking right.
