When farms and smallholders need extra hands

The farming year doesn’t divide neatly into permanent roles. Common needs:

  • Harvest season β€” picking, sorting, packing fresh produce.
  • Planting season β€” preparing beds, sowing, transplanting.
  • Fencing and infrastructure β€” repairs to fences, gates, kraals, sheds.
  • Livestock work β€” dipping, dosing, branding days, moving animals between camps.
  • General farm hands β€” cleaning equipment, water troughs, pump houses, workshop tidies.
  • Seasonal pruning and weeding β€” vineyards, orchards, vegetable plots.
  • Roadside and fenceline clearing.

A lot of this is short-burst work that doesn’t justify a permanent hire but absolutely needs reliable extra hands when it’s needed.

Things worth checking

Farm work has its own rhythm. Look for workers with:

  • Experience with similar work β€” picking, livestock, fencing all need different skills.
  • Reliable transport β€” farms aren’t usually walking distance.
  • Tolerance for early starts and outdoor work.
  • Specific skills if relevant β€” tractor competency, livestock handling, shearing, irrigation.

A profile that lists what they’ve done before tells you most of this in 30 seconds.

Pay and compliance

Farm worker minimum wages are governed by Sectoral Determination 13 of the Department of Employment and Labour. Check the current minimum at labour.gov.za β€” it sits separately from the general National Minimum Wage. The minimum is the floor; you can agree higher.

VukaWork is a marketplace β€” workers set their own rates and you can accept, negotiate, or pick another worker. On top of the day rate, many farms also provide transport, lunch or (for remote seasonal work) accommodation.

How VukaWork helps

Even outside the formal labour market, the same problems apply: matching the right workers to the right work, and making sure both sides are protected. VukaWork:

  • Shows worker profiles with experience and trust signals.
  • Lets you post and choose by area β€” workers from nearby farms or towns.
  • Keeps your payment safe in escrow and releases it when the work is done.
