When farms and smallholders need extra hands

The farming year doesn’t divide neatly into permanent roles. Common needs:

• Experience with similar work — picking, livestock, fencing all need different skills.
• Reliable transport — farms aren’t usually walking distance.
• Tolerance for early starts and outdoor work.
• Specific skills if relevant — tractor competency, livestock handling, shearing, irrigation.

Pay and compliance

Farm worker minimum wages are governed by Sectoral Determination 13 of the Department of Employment and Labour. Check the current minimum at labour.gov.za — it sits separately from the general National Minimum Wage. The minimum is the floor; you can agree higher.
