Always check the qualification first
In South Africa, electrical work on permanent installations legally requires a registered electrician. The two qualifications you should look for are:
- Wireman’s Licence — for work up to a certain voltage and complexity.
- Master Installation Electrician — for more complex installations.
Both are issued by the Department of Employment and Labour. After permanent electrical work, you should also receive a Certificate of Compliance (COC) — that piece of paper proves the work meets safety standards.
Why this matters beyond safety: your home insurance can refuse to cover an electrical-fire claim without a valid COC for the installation, and you’ll need a COC if you ever sell the property.
When you need an electrician (and not a handyman)
Some “electrical” jobs are fine for a competent handyman — replacing a light fitting, swapping a fan. Others are strictly electrician territory:
- Anything in the DB board (your consumer unit / circuit breaker box).
- Wiring repairs or extensions inside walls.
- Geyser element work (often grouped with plumbing, but technically electrical).
- Compliance certificates for selling a property.
- Any work that the insurance company will need evidence of.
If you’re unsure, default to a qualified electrician — the cost difference is small, the safety difference is huge.
Getting a fair quote
For anything beyond a quick fix, ask for a fixed-price written quote that covers:
- The scope (what’s being done).
- Labour AND materials, broken down.
- Estimated duration.
- Whether a COC will be issued at the end.
Compare two or three quotes if you have time. The cheapest can be a red flag; the most expensive isn’t always the most skilled. A reasonable mid-range quote from someone with good references is usually the safest bet.
